Design systems for large-scale enterprise products

I build the component libraries teams assemble from, and the tokens that let one system carry several brands. The governance around it is the part that keeps a system in use once the launch is over.

What I do

The work

01
Build or rebuild the design system
  • Structured as Foundations, Components, Patterns and Templates, with semantic versioning so teams can see what changed and when.
  • Enterprise interaction patterns for dense operational screens: forms, overlays, tables and status. Most systems skip them.

Component libraries in Figma, mapped to how designers work
  • Components mapped to layout types, so a designer picks a layout and swaps in what they need instead of rebuilding it.
  • Figma governance for large shared working files: structure, naming and permissions that survive a team of contributors.

Design tokens and multi-brand theming
  • One set of components carrying several brands. At MAG that meant three airport websites, one of them on a different palette.
  • Tokens defined so the difference between brands is data, not a second set of components.

Design governance
  • Leading the design and UX process across delivery teams. Informing developers, business analysts and product owners on best practice while delivering hands-on.
  • Adoption run build-forward rather than by retrofit: new and changed work is implemented to the system, so the baseline moves with delivery.

Accessibility, review and handover
  • WCAG 2.1 built into the components rather than audited at the end.
  • Pixel-perfect design review against the build, and support through UAT before release.

Where this has been done

Currently Principal / Lead UX Designer at HSBC, on design governance and a design system rebuild for an internal enterprise platform. Before that, MAG and Warner Leisure Hotels. Three pieces of that work are written up:
